Is the Pyroelectric coating on the panel directly
No, the Pyroelectric glass and coating reside inside the sealed Ultrasolar QuantunBoost™ device. There are no user serviceable parts in the device that need to be accessed by the user or field technician.
What is a Pyroelectric?
Pyroelectric are materials with a special type of crystal structure which allows it to create electric charge when subjected to heat.
How does Pyroelectric help increase the power of a solar cell?
We create electric field from a coating of pyroelectric material on glass. The field is applied on the solar cell using the electrodes of the solar cell. The applied electric field removes electrons and holes from traps and accelerates them towards the electrodes. This increases the current resulting in increase of DC power from the panel.
Doesn’t the Pyroelectric need a gradient in temperature?
The Pyroelectric needs a temperature which keeps varying continuously. Ultrasolar’s special film structure allows the temperature to continuously vary microscopically inside the film.
What is the difference in Pyroelectricity and Thermoelectricity?
Pyroelectricity is the behavior of a special class of ferroelectric crystals. In order to work, Pyroelectricity needs temporally varying temperature. Thermoelectricity is a result of temperature difference between junctions between dissimilar metals. The effect is also called Seebeck effect and requires spatially varying temperature.
How is the connection made with the QB box?
The QB box input is connected to the output of the solar panel and the output of the box is connected to the inverter using industry standard MC4 connectors.
Does the box have to be kept next to the Solar panel?
No, the box does not have to be kept next to the solar panel. However long cable should be avoided (less than 30 feet or 9.1 meters is OK).
Does the box need to be exposed to sunlight?
No, but it responds to ambient heat in the environment.
Does the performance of the box improve at elevated temperatures?
The data shows minor improvements from 5 deg.C to 55 deg.C. It is not very highly temperature sensitive.
Does the box need to be kept at elevated temperatures?
The box has been tested successfully from 5 deg.C to 85 deg.C. We are gathering data for higher and lower temperatures.
