Umesh Padval

Umesh Padval, a partner in Bessemer’s Menlo Park, California office, joined the firm in 2007. At Bessemer, he focuses on investments in the IT and clean-tech sectors.

Currently, Umesh sits on the boards of Avnera, a fabless analog-semiconductor company; low-power, non-volatile magnetic-memory company Avalanche Technologies; Berkeley Design Automation, an analog EDA company; UltraSolar Technologies; Tigo Energy, which produces power optimization technology for solar installations; Pinnacle Engines, formerly known as Cleeves Engines, which makes internal-combustion engines; LED power-management company Exclara; and utility-scale, energy-management company Xtreme Power. He also sits on the boards of semiconductor companies Entropic Communications (NASDAQ: ENTR) and Integrated Device Technology (NASDAQ: IDTI). Umesh was previously on the boards of C-Cube Microsystems (Sold to LSI), Elantec Semiconductor(Sold to Intersil), Pictos Technologies (Sold to ESS) and Monolithic Power Systems.

Umesh brings to Bessemer more than 20 years of experience in marketing, sales and general management in areas including computing, mobile communications and consumer-digital entertainment. He joined Bessemer from LSI Logic, where he was executive vice-president of the consumer-products group. Umesh came to LSI Logic via its acquisition of C-Cube Microsystems, a public company where he served as president and CEO. Previously, Umesh held management positions at VLSI Technology, serving as executive vice-president of the consumer and computing products groups. He began his career at Advanced Micro Devices.

Umesh holds a bachelor’s of technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and a master’s degree in engineering from Stanford University. He is also active on advisory boards at Stanford. He is an avid sports fan as well as loves to travel to less travelled places around the world.

Sunny Sugaya

Sunny Sugaya has been Head of Asia Business Development and a General Partner of Jafco Ventures since 2003 and first joined Jafco Co., Ltd. in 1999. Sunny’s 22 years of technology and business development experience and network of relationships distinguishes our ability to bring leading-edge products to the Japan market. He is viewed as a remarkable asset to entrepreneurs and widely respected by most strategic players in Japan.Prior to joining Jafco, Sunny spent 12 years at Motorola Japan, where he was responsible for design teams building next-generation cell phones and pagers. In this capacity, he managed both software and hardware development teams. A number of the design modules he created are still in use today. He also held roles overseeing product development and marketing of wireless communication equipment.

At Jafco, Sunny and the Asia Business Development Team are or have been actively involved with Brion Technologies (ASML Holdings NV), Calypto Design Systems, Devicescape Software, Hara Software, Infinera (INFN), Mimosa Systems (Iron Mountain), Proofpoint (PFPT), Purfresh, SiTime and Solidcore Systems (McAfee).

Portfolio companies that Sunny and his team previously supported while at JAFCO Co., Ltd. include Arkivio (Rocket Software), Ingrian Networks (SafeNet), Mobilian (Intel), Ocular Networks (Tellabs), Philsar (Conexant) and Trigo Technologies (IBM).

Sunny received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and electrical engineering from the National Defense Academy in Japan.

Rob Soni

Rob Soni has been an entrepreneur and venture capitalist for over 20 years.  He is a Director at several private and public companies, and Chairman of ZippSlip.  Before joining Matrix Partners Rob was Managing General Partner at Bessemer Venture Partners where he led the firm’s investments in Powertel (sold to Voicestream for $8.7B), Sirocco (sold to Sycamore for $2.7B), Bladelogic (NASDAQ:BLOG before being bought by BMC for ~$900M), and Broadsoft (NASDAQ:BSFT), among others.

Prior to BVP  Rob was an Associate in the Boston office of the Boston Consulting Group where he worked with industrial, technology, and health care clients.  Rob is a past member of the Executive Committee of the National Venture Capital Association, the Global Semiconductor Alliance, and several charity, educational, and foundation boards.

Over the course of his career Rob has produced aggregate transaction value of over $20B, with his most recent exit in the summer of 2012 being the purchase by Citrix of Bytemobile in which he was a Founding seed investor.  Rob is also currently an active personal investor in several private companies and advises several venture firms. Rob is an honors graduate of Harvard College and a Rotary Scholar.  Rob enjoys tennis and squash and lives in Boston.

Tee Khiang Ng

Mr. Ng has over 18 years of entrepreneurship and investment background. Known in the industry as a serial entrepreneur, TK Ng has started and founded several companies many of which have been acquired at higher valuation and one is listed today on the Main Board of SGX.

Mr. Ng is responsible for strategic oversight and day-to-day operation of EVIA growth opportunities since co-founding EVIA Capital Partners in 2005 after a successful role with Raintrees Ventures Pte Ltd where he was responsible for that Asset Management arm of Westcomb Financials until 2005.

Prior to that, Mr. Ng was a Director with BroadVen Pte Ltd where he was Co-Founder after another successful run as Director and Partner of Venture TDF Pte Ltd where he was the advisor to Venture TDF a China (PRC) based investment fund where he invested into VTDF.

Prior to that, from 2000 to 2001, Mr. Ng was Chairman and Director of CNT Health and Food Pte Ltd where he established CNT Health food, a bird-nest and Chinese nutraceutical supplements contract Manufacturer Company, a part of a larger herbal products distribution conglomerate. TK brought in their new General Manager and helped fill key management roles where he shared managerial responsibilities for CNT until the company was sold to a Hong Kong based nutritional group

Mr Ng’s broad background spans not only investments in South Asia but also multiple industries in the Americas where he worked for the California Public Utilities Commission, Citibank, and Booz Allen Hamilton working on regulated investments, as a research analyst, and a World Bank advisor evaluating loans for China State employees.

Mr. Ng as a BSIE from University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MSIE from Stanford University.

Santosh Kumar

Santosh is the CEO of Ultrasolar Technology. He is a serial entrepreneur and has started and run 2 other technology companies in the past. Ultrasolar Technology is a result of his MS thesis works in the areas of Pyroelectricity and high efficiency solar cells. His inventions and technology are the basis of 3 companies, over a dozen products and more than two dozen technologies. He has also spent 20 successful years in large and mid size semiconductor and hard drive companies in various roles spanning from technology to operations. Santosh is the author of 15 papers and owns several patents.

Santosh has developed several difficult and vital partnerships with large multinationals. He also advises some young start-up companies in the area of company building, product positioning and go to market.

Santosh holds an MS degree in Physics from IIT Delhi and an M.Tech. (Master of Technology) in Materials Science and Engineering from IIT Kharagpur.
